Machine Control is changing the way earthmoving equipment operates on construction sites. GNSS receivers and sensors mounted on the machine calculate the blade’s position in real time relative to the project’s digital model. The operator sees on the in-cab display how much to cut or fill, while the system can also control the blade automatically. The result is fewer passes, less staking out, and less material waste.
Below, we present selected installations of Trimble Machine Control systems carried out by JGC on infrastructure, road construction, and earthwork projects throughout Greece.
Recent installations:
Cat 160H Grader at the Corfu Airport
- Location: Corfu
- System: Trimble GCS900 with Dual GNSS
- Application: Improvement of the runway at Corfu International Airport “Ioannis Kapodistrias”
Airport runways require the strictest tolerances in road construction, both in terms of gradients and layer thickness. In Dual GNSS mode, two receivers at the ends of the blade measure the position of each side separately. This allows the grader to precisely follow both the elevation and the cross-slope of the design, without the need for continuous surveying by surveyors.
Cat® 275 Compact Track Loader with Smart Blade in Magnesia
- Region: Magnesia
- System: Trimble Earthworks with Dual GNSS
- Application: Road construction projects
Compact track loaders maneuver easily in tight spaces and in areas where a large machine cannot fit, such as curbs, sidewalks, and intersections. Using Trimble Earthworks and two GNSS receivers mounted on the blade, the Cat 275 performs precise grading while the operator monitors the work on the in-cab display.
Cat 14H Grader in Macedonia
- Region: Macedonia
- System: Trimble Earthworks with Single GNSS and IMU
- Application: Road construction
The Single GNSS configuration uses a GNSS receiver to determine the machine’s position. IMU sensors measure the blade’s tilt and orientation. It is a cost-effective solution for 3D Machine Control in road construction projects, such as earthwork and subgrade grading.
Cat 140H Grader in Macedonia
- Region: Macedonia
- System: Trimble Earthworks with Single GNSS and IMU
- Application: Final road paving layers
In the final passes, every centimeter counts. A pass thicker than the design calls for means more material, and a thinner one means corrections. Machine Control helps the operator achieve the design elevation with fewer passes and a more uniform surface.
How Your Fleet Benefits from Machine Control
- Accuracy: The blade follows the project’s digital model, not stakes.
- Fewer passes: the job is done right the first time.
- Material savings: less overuse of aggregates and asphalt.
- Less reliance on staking: surveyors spend less time setting stakes.
- Safety: fewer workers moving around the machinery.
