Pipeline Defect Mapper
The vLoc3-DM, by Vivax-Metrotech, is used to precisely locate pipelines and assist in evaluating pipe coating defects. The system can be used on either transmission or distribution systems. A complete ACVG survey can be undertaken using the vLoc3-DM and plug-in A-frame.

The display on the vLoc3-DM has been configured specifically for pipeline evaluation. Data can be graphed in real-time on the receiver while still on site. The walk back feature highlights the operator’s position on the graph allowing them to return to the point of interest where further evaluation or an ACVG, A-frame survey can be undertaken.
With two sets of 3D antennas, signal distortion is easily detected and displayed on the bright full-color display. The vLoc3-DM introduces new locate perspective screens of Vector Locate for fully automatic non-walk over locating, Transverse Graph showing both peak and null simultaneously providing an immediate measurement of signal distortion, and Plan View showing the relative orientation of the cable at any angle. Visual and mechanical vibration alerts can also be configured by the user providing warnings for shallow depth, overload, overhead cables, and excessive swinging.
The 150-watt Loc-150Tx DM Transmitter typically applies the locate signal by connecting to the pipe at CP stations and test posts. The transmitter is designed to be powered from CP stations, AC or external batteries. Two rotary/push control knobs provide access to frequency selection, output level, menu information and active/standby modes. This transmitter is supplied with a direct connection lead, DC input lead and AC mains lead.
Signal Distortion Indicators Are Shown on the Receiver’s Screen
Signal distortion is an intrinsic problem and is the result of additional currents flowing in the ground other than the outgoing signal from the transmitter. The vLoc3-DM gives ‘on the fly,’ color-coded indication of distortion on the LCD’s signal strength bar graph. The bar graph will change colors depending on the level of distortion.
- A green bar graph indicates clean locating conditions with very low distortion.
- A blue bar graph indicates a medium level of distortion.
- A red bar graph indicates very high distortion. Both Peak and Null locates are subject to significant positional errors.
Programmable Alerts and Warnings
Real-time visual and mechanical vibration alerts can be set to provide warnings for shallow depth, overload, overhead cables, or excessive swinging.
- Swing Alert
This indicates that the operator is swinging the locator excessively and could result in misleading information. - Overhead Cable
This indicates that the signal is mainly radiating from above. This is usually caused by the signal traveling along with overhead cables. - Signal Overload
This is usually caused by operating very close to a power transformer or placing the unit very close to a transmitter in the Induction mode. - Shallow Cable
This indicates that the locator has detected a cable that is possibly less than 5.9”/15cm deep. Proceed with caution.

Review Screen
Allows to review the points of the complete graph. Shows data information of LF current, total survey distance, distance from the previous measurement.
Classic Locate Screen
Used to locate the position of the pipeline, with the addition of surface distance to the last measurement with three color-coded distortion levels.
A-Frame Screen
The A-frame screen shows a peak locate screen, compass indicator, direction to a fault, a graph of fault magnitude, and data logging options.
Plan View Screen
Displays the theoretical line in 2D from above ground in omnidirectional mode.
Vector Locate
Shows orientation, line position, and distance relative to the locator in 3D.
Transverse Plot Screen
Is used to display the peak and null to compare distortion shape.
